Class of 2013 President: Tejen Shah
Class of 2014 President: Andy Tran
Class of 2015 President: Derek Schocken
Executive Vice President
The Exec VP’s responsibilities include assisting the President and ESG with any and all projects, whenever required, especially those involving the administration and faculty members. He/she presides over meetings and runs the show whenever the President is not around. Most importantly, the exec VP is responsible for organizing the efforts of the AAC, ESG’s Academic Action Committee. This will entail communicating between ESG and AAC, and working with the AAC to develop and achieve goals in academic reform.
Candidate: Thomas Bierbower
Platform: The primary role of ESG’s Executive Vice President is to coordinate the efforts of ESG’s Accademic Action Committee with those of ESG’s primary body. I’ve been working on AAC since it’s inception a year and a half ago, and I’ve seen the great work that both the outgoing ESG President and Vice President have done in this role. I hope to follow in their footsteps and continue doing my best to make AAC as effective as possible. In particular, I hope to work with the incoming ESG president, Jonathan Zhang, on ideas that he has already proposed to bring ESG and AAC into a stronger working relationship to better serve the needs of Pratt students.
Treasurer
The Treasurer is responsible for all ESG finances. She/he plays a very involved role on ESG, setting and managing the annual budget to ensure funding for new and existing ESG sponsored events. She/he administers the process for allocating funding to engineering student groups and works closely with the nice people in OSAF finances to ensure timely payments and smooth flow of ESG funds.
Candidate: Nathan Li
Platform: Hey Everyone!
I have been class president for the past two years, and I have realized through this experience how wonderful Pratt truly is. Everyone is so unique, intelligent, and creative. I want to be able to impact my fellow peers as much as they have impacted me. As your Treasurer, I will do my best to bring amazing events and gifts to the entire Pratt community.
Publicity Chair
The Publicity Chair plays a crucial role in insuring the word about ESG’s events gets out. She/he maintains contact with the school about these events, handles faculty invitations, and designs flyers for events.
Candidate: Marina Goll
Platform: My name is Marina Goll; I am a sophomore studying Biomedical Engineering and I’m hoping to serve as Publicity Chair this term. As the Service Chair and former Publicity chair of Zeta Tau Alpha, I have experience both planning and advertising events. Various projects for clubs, such as organizing the plot for the swing showcase last spring, have helped me to develop the organization and attention to details necessary for the job. As Publicity Chair, I will work to continue increasing both campus awareness of engineering events and opportunities and undergraduate attendance to such events.
Secretary
The Secretary performs a myriad of administrative duties. These duties include keeping and distributing minutes of meetings, and maintain calendar and other records of ESG events. She/he also must maintain a list of the contact information for all ESG officers.
Candidate: Sophie Vos
Hey Pratt! My name is Sophie Vos and I am a junior ME hoping to serve you as ESG Secretary for the next year. Over the past few years, my campus involvement as a travel team member for the EWB/Duke Engineers for International Development El Salvador bridge project, the past President of Duke Club Field Hockey, and trip leader for Project WILD have given me the leadership and organizational skills necessary to be a successful secretary and to work with the rest of ESG to plan both old and new events. Specifically as secretary, I will work to improve records of ESG meetings and events as well as facilitate communication between students, faculty, and other campus organizations.
Director of Communication and Technology
The Director of Technology for ESG maintains ESG’s website. She/he aids the boards with any work regarding use of technology including managing online surveys and elections. She/he also helps the Publicity Chair with electronic communication with the school and the student body.
Candidate: Sam Xi
Platform: My name is Sam Xi, and I am a junior majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Physics. As your Director of Communications and Technology, I will work to bring greater awareness to ESG by increasing traffic to the ESG website and promoting ESG as as a source of the latest happenings in the Pratt Community. I have experience in web development and several programming languages, and I’m also very organized and detailed so I have all the skills to perform this job well.
By the way, some basic math for us: Duke > UNC and Pratt > Trinity. Go Engineers!!
Community Service Chair
The Community Service chair spearheads all of ESG’s community service efforts. These efforts include implementing fundraising ideas and leading community service projects.
Candidate: Emily Sloan
Platform: Hey Pratt,
My name is Emily Sloan and I am your current Community Service Chair. I am running for re-election, so that I can continue working with the SMARTS program, and increase the number of service opportunities for Pratt students in the Durham community. I have two years of experience as Community Service Chair, and I have expanded the position since my election as a freshman. I hope to continue serving the Pratt community, and I hope to provide Duke engineers with many new and exciting opportunities for service in the coming year.
Thank you for your vote,
Emily Sloan
Industry Relations Chair
The Industry Relations Chair is an incredible opportunity to develop strong ties to numerous top-notch companies that recruit at Pratt. They will be responsible for maintaining existing industry contacts, developing new ones, and coordinating industry events.
Candidate: Charlie Haley
Platform: Hey Pratt! I’m a junior ME, and excited to potentially be your Director of Industrial Relations. This newly-created position is pretty important, and has room for growth. As the 2011 VP of Industrial Relations for EWB, a similar position, I collaborated with corporations and Duke administrators and planned events. The Director of Industrial Relations position requires strong communications and marketing knowledge, which I gained through my MMS certificate classes and project work. And as a junior looking for internships, I sympathize with students looking for more cohesive and rewarding corporate interactions. Vote for me – I’ll do a good job!
Candidate: Danish Hussain
Platform: Whats up guys, my name is Danish but by no means am I a pastry. I wasn’t born in this country so instead of becoming president of the US, I decided the next best thing was to run for industry relations. I want to bring in companies especially for Pratt students, and these companies should range across a wide variety of fields, from engineering to finance. Networking is crucial in this market and I know I can develop relationships for us engineers. However it works out, this is going to be a great semester for us. Hail Pratt★s.
Candidate: Tory Lang
Platform: Hello Pratt! My name is Tory Lang, and I am a sophomore studying ECE. I would love the opportunity to serve as your Director of Industry Relations to better connect you to the corporate engineering world.
Here are a few things I look forward to enacting on your behalf:
- Actively sustaining current relationships with our many company contacts
- Ensuring that a strong variety of companies are represented during events such as TechConnect, Career Fairs, and the E-socials
- Creating additional innovative venues for you to casually and comfortably interact with industry representatives
- Seeking out under-represented engineering industries and smaller companies/startups to provide more variety and insights on the types of options available to you
- Utilizing both Pratt alums in industry and Pratt faculty who have industry connections to better link you to opportunities in industry
Class Presidents
The class presidents voice and represent the views, desires, and ideas of their respective classes. While participating in generic ESG duties the Class Presidents keep her/his or her class in mind, and voice specific questions, concerns, or ideas raised by her/his peers. The senior class president also speaks at the Pratt Graduation and orders the beer for ESG events.
Class of 2013 President
Candidate: Tejen Shah
Platform: Hi Class of 2013,
It has been my pleasure to serve as our class president for the past three years and I ask that you trust me once again. I created the Past E-Picnic T-shirt Order Program and as an ESG board member I have helped improve the E-ball experience as well as helped with the formation of AAC, which tackles academic issues related to Pratt.
I plan on working with other ESG members to fully develop the Corporate E-Socials so that everyone in our class can interact with more companies. I look forward to hearing ideas from you about senior class gifts and I will make sure your ideas are acted on. Vote Tejen Shah for Class of 2013 ESG President!
Class of 2014 President
Candidate: Andy Tran
Platform: Hello yall! I’m Andy and I’m running for your Class of 2014 ESG President! A lot of you may not know me, but I want you to know that I am very approachable. I hope this trait will allow me to meet many of you and at the same time voice your opinions and ideas! I think this will be a great experience and way for me to improve the various amount of events we have all semester. Thanks!
Class of 2015 President
Candidate: Danielle Colson
Platform: Fellow Pratt students, my name is Danielle Colson and I am running for Class President. I take pride in being a “Pratt Stars” and would like the opportunity to share that pride with the rest of our engineering class. One of my goals is to increase the community amongst our freshman class by providing freshman only engineering events and socials. I am also interested in promoting and hopefully improving upon events that are already in place such as the E-Socials so that more freshman enjoy and make use of these events. A higher turn out at these events will help to promote community, networking opportunities, and fun. I am running for President of the Class of 2015 because I would like to help to unite our freshman class, improve upon programs already in place, and make events more accessible to freshmen.
Thank you,
Danielle Colson
Candidate: Derek Schocken
Platform: Other than brilliant, creative, and devastatingly good-looking people, what comes to mind when you think of Pratt students? For me, when I think Pratt, I think community. After serving my first semester as President of the Class of 2015, I can tell you that some amazing things are down the road for our community. The Engineering on East Lecture Series is set to start in the next month, along with a Freshman class sponsored E-Social, and the class gift. ESG, and the freshman community, had a strong showing last semester with our successes in regards to the E-Picnic and E-Oktoberfest. I seek to continue such success in the coming months with the E-Ball, and spring E-Picnic along with a growing role within ESG, and continued collaboration with AAC. I believe, in the Pratt community, I believe in building on success, and I believe in us.

Vignesh Vudatha
My name is Vignesh Vudatha. I’m a BME major with a possible minor in mathematics. I reside in the Brown dorm. I’m running for ESG President so that I can help make the Duke experience enjoyable for all the freshmen engineers. I’ve had previous leadership experience in high school that involves organizing events and trips. I will do my best to improve your Duke experience and to implement any suggestions or event ideas that you have. So, vote for me, Vignesh Vudatha, as your Freshmen ESG President.
Eddie Li
“Why am I running for ESG office? Simply put I believe I have what it takes. I absolutely understand that it is imperative that the right individual represents your student voice – I
am here to assure you I can be that individual. The leadership qualities I have garnered as head boy of my high school prepare me perfectly for this position. I’ve been in that role
before and flourished as a result. What do you get if you elect me? You’ll have the fullest confidence that you have someone emphatic that can push for your views, someone with
your best interests in mind. Allow me to be your voice, and I’ll prove it. Vote for someone you can be proud of – vote for Eddie Edward Li.”
Benson Tran
As my high school’s marching band section leader and soccer team captain, I motivated my teammates to work hard. I didn’t preach to them why I worked hard, but instead, showed them my work ethic in hopes that they would be inspired and would work diligently to achieve ambitious goals. In terms of engineering, I built a Wiimote Smartboard based on an idea from a TED talk and gave it to my teachers who used it in lieu of Promethean boards. I’m running for this position because I want to help organize activities that I hope will foster ingenuity, involvement, and most importantly, fun.
Derek Schocken
Other than brilliant, creative, and devastatingly good-looking people, what comes to mind when you think of Pratt students? For me, when I think Pratt, I think community. As we stand here, still at the beginning of our engineering journey, I believe that we have the unique opportunity to develop into a strong, spirited, and tight-knit group, one in which everyone knows each other, and genuinely cares about their fellow Pratt students. It is this reason why you should vote for me for our Class President. I can promise that I will do everything in my power to create this unity, establish a more prominent engineering presence on East, and foster the best spirit Pratt has ever seen. I believe in the Pratt spirit and more importantly, I believe in us.
Victoria Png
My name is Victoria Png, and I want to be your freshman ESG president. Besides organization, responsibility, and motivation, I have experience planning engineering-related events/activities. Throughout high school I directed E-Camps for pre-freshmen and managed our annual E-Week luncheons where professionals shared their engineering experiences. I was also president of our country’s only high school chapter of Society of Women Engineers (SWE). As president of SWE, I organized many outreach/social events getting members of the community interested in engineering. If elected, I will continue to actively promote engineering and attempt to create even more of an amazing environment for Pratt.
GaeMin Lee
Hi Pratt, my name is GaeMin (if you feel lost by attempting to pronounce my name, chances are you’re probably pronouncing it correctly; so no worries.) We have pride in ourselves as Pratt students, and rightly so. We are engineers who seek practical solutions to global problems, and thus mankind’s future is upon us. Be proud. It is, however, often costly to find these solutions and answer the world’s lingering questions. I promise that I can serve you as your president to secure the finances and support necessary to fulfill even our most lofty goals. I intend to create enjoyable and productive social events and fundraisers, and hold a forum for us to exchange our views on school security, the environment, or any other problems that Duke may have. I am ambitious, motivated, and prepared. For the past two years I was the president of my high school class, the founder of an environmental club, and captain of a Judo club. So, let me be your voice.
James Hsu
If you can remember seeing me during O-week, when you asked me what major I was planning to be in; my reply surprisingly was “BME, BUT I am probably going to drop out soon.” The fact of being an engineer scared me. This all changed though, after the first Pratt social we had during O-week. I felt like this was a COMMUNITY, a home inside of Duke.
I want to foster a community that we all know we can retreat to when we have our hard times. I want to hold events that we as Pratts can proudly invite our Trinity friends.
Griffin Cooper
My fellow Pratt students, I am running for Engineering president because I have an ardent passion for our school, as well as for the amiable, innovative students that make Pratt such a great place to be. Therefore, I wish to channel my excitement for this school into making Pratt a better place. In regards to my leadership experience, I served as Student Council Secretary my senior year of high school where I organized fundraisers and coordinated a multitude of student events like the Homecoming Dance and the Pep Rallies. I am a very social, approachable guy and will be more than eager to take suggestions from the “Pratternity” and present them to the government. If elected, I will bring high-profile speakers in to share their experiences in the engineering field as well as the avenues they took that lead them to their successes. Also, to quell a perpetual problem here at Duke, I will also start a Pratt student competition to redesign our tedious bus system to make it more efficient where the winner will receive a prize as well as see his design implemented. If anyone is to improve our transportation system, I will see it through that a Pratt engineer is receiving recognition. I really hope I receive your vote. There are great things to come for Pratt! Let’s put Pratt in the right hands. Vote Cooper!
